SANJU - Over Hyped Dishonest Hagiography

Sanju - An over hyped dishonest movie with two Top Gun Performers at the fore!

The movie is good; Damn good at its hagiographical portrayal of its protagonist. No prize for guessing that it's an audience moving, stirring our tear glands kind of movie written, edited, co-produced and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, a very good friend of Sanjay Dutt. One could say the movie does superb PR work to give a clean hit to the Actor.

Enough bombarding the movie... The must mention sweet fact is you get to watch a TOP GUN performance from both Ranbir Kapoor and Paresh Rawal. Ranbir has literally rendered a deliciously flawless performance and made his presence serve jitters to the new age chocolate boy no brainer movie heroes. Once again, I fell in love with his on screen charming persona like I did when he lived the role in Barfi. So darn unfortunate he chooses (or bags) fewer sensational blockbuster movie material in comparison to heroes who are actually fit to only be poster boys.
He makes the lighter moments seem like a breeze of fresh air in the otherwise serious movie. When he is in the shot you wouldn't notice anyone else except for the times Paresh Rawal gets ur heart bleeding.

Mr. Rawal carries the pain and helplessness of the father, the much respected actor-politician Sunil Dutt. He has those eyes and a face that could home deliver to u in a platter, the sorrow that the father had when he found his son becoming the drug addict drowning his youth and wealth in substance abuse and drugs. He portrays Mr. Dutt's heart being torn between disciplining Sanju and feeling sorry for his emotional vacuum caused by his mother's demise and his own misery of losing his beloved.
Manisha Koirala looks quite like Nargis in the make up and costume however fails to impress us as the mother but one couldn't blame her entirely because she hardly had any screen time to prove her part. But there sure were a few goosebumps here and there during the song, "Kar har maidan fateh". Sonam Kapoor has an insignificant role and I thought unnecessary too, given the fact that his first two marriages have completely been erased for the audience. Anushka Sharma has a trivial role, a stupid wig and a misplaced sense of sympathy for a failed public image of Sanju.

Dia Mirza has however done justice to the few shots she is on screen and makes her presence felt as the partner who always stood by the husband through crests and troughs.
The friend in need, 'Kamli' is another almost Top Gun portrayal by Vicky Kaushal. I say almost because his character post the short separation from Baba seems too distant and lack lustre as against the initial 'yaar' portion where he was vibrant and took charge on screen. Could also be due to the second half feeling a little dragged or stretched too far. Nevertheless it sure is a mention worthy character in the movie adding some sense and humor to the story.

It is said that the real 'kamli' in Sanju's life is Mr.Paresh Ghelani and he has reacted very emotionally on Instagram thanking Sanju for making him part of the pride. This reaction despite the fall-out claim and their 'lives falling in the labyrinth of tragedy and controversies' is surprising.

Cinematography and screenplay are topics I don't think I would know much about so I shall refrain mentions regarding those.

To end the review I ll list out the issues I had a problem with:

1. None of Sanjay's marriages have been shown or elaborated. Its just been kicked out.
2. The sisters are mute in the movie and another hidden fact is his troubled relationship with sis Priya ... At one time she didn't even know Sanju married Manyata until the media questioned her.
3. Sanjay Dutt's philandering and womanizing have been shown like a joke. Yes, when Baba announces 350 as the number of women he slept with, Anushka smiles, seemingly mighty happy because Sanju was saying the truth. I didn't find that funny and it shouldn't be portrayed as a joke for your adults to get ideas.
4. He was in possession of 3 diff arms and at one point he had said he had one for his hunting interest and later withdrew that comment. The movie conveniently brushes off and/or hides some of the truth so as to make the whitewashing easier. Claims that he held arms to protect himself and the sisters ...

Only one thing I would love to mention is that the woes of a drug addict is shown in a very light and non ugly way despite highlighting how screwed life would be after addiction and how bad company could ruin one's life. So the movie is a 'definite good to go' for kids and young adults so to speak.

I woke up to news that the movie crossed 300 crores club and I AM SO HAPPY, SO GLAD FOR RANBIR! Ranbir Kapoor is the sizzler to watch out for in this movie for sure.

Until next time, Ta!  XOXO!
